The Egg Game

9 Sep

On 3rd-5th September I worked with staff at Letterkenny Institute of Technology in Country Donegal, helping colleagues think through recommendations from recent institution-wide Programme Reviews and on Friday 7th September I worked with staff in the Sports Faculty at Sunderland University who are currently preparing for revalidation of some programmes. In both institutions we talked about assessment literacy and I mentioned an old exercise, The Egg Game that I have used over the years to promote discussion of assessment issues with staff and students, particularly developing assessment literacy in the latter. The attached reworked handout provides details on how to run the Egg Game. Please feel free to use this open educational resource and if you do, let me know how it went for you. Graduation and PASS conference at Bradford

26 Jul

It’s been a lovely week: on Tuesday I was awarded my PhD by Published works at Leeds metropolitan University (see photo by my son Matt Brown, incidentally, did I mention he got a First!)

We went straight on from there to present about our masters level Assessment project Assimilate at Bradford University-led  PASS conference. PASS is another NTFS project which has been exploring programme level assessment, and the event was an excellent networking and learning  opportunity. The slides I used about Assimilate are here. A great day in Belfast before the deluge!

30 Jun

Thanks to everyone who attended my workshop on Masters level assessment at Queens University Belfast. I very much enjoyed and learned from the presentations by fellow presenters also.

It was a ‘challenging’ journey home: you might have seen news coverage of the terrible weather in the North East of England on Thursday night which was largely centred on the suburbs where I live.! Still  we didn’t quite need to build an ark!

Here are the slides I used in my presentation (without the cakes!) QUB Masters Workshop (677 downloads)

University of Sunderland

14 Jun

I’ve been working today with colleagues in the Department of Sport and Exercise Science at Sunderland University (an easy trip on the Metro from home) on ‘Refreshing the Curriculum’ prior to re-validation and review. They are a really committed and student-centred team, and they participated actively in an energetic and demanding morning. The bacon sandwiches were jolly good too. Here are the slides we used.  Sunderland (570 downloads)
